A 6ft 3in central defender who is comfortable in possession of the ball as well as a strong tackler, Alex has been with Chelsea from the Under-11 age group and appeared 12 times for the youth team as a schoolboy in 2010/11. He made his debut against Tottenham in the September of that year and scored his first goal later in the season, a winner at Bristol City, before his first involvement for the reserves as a substitute against Manchester United in April.

In 2011/12 he came into the FA Youth Cup side as the campaign progressed and was youth team manager Adi Viveash’s pick of the players in the second leg of the final as the trophy was won. Davey also started his first reserve game before signing his first professional contract in July 2012.

During the following season, while still a second year, he was one of only two players – along with Lewis Baker – to feature in every game of both the NextGen Series and FA Youth Cup campaigns. He also became a regular at the heart of the Under-21 team defence, often partnering Nathan Ake. In total, he made 17 appearances for the older age group, finishing the season as the highest appearance maker.
A couple of injuries hampered Davey’s involvement throughout 2013/14, though he did still manage 14 appearances and scored in a 4-1 win at Southampton in the August. On the international stage, he has represented Scotland at Under-19 level, though still remains eligible for England.

It was announced on 26 November that Davey had joined League One Scunthorpe United on loan until 3 January, having also agreed terms on a new contract until 2016. It is his first loan spell.

On 2 January the loan was extended until the end of the season with the player having made four first team appearances for the Iron.
