A methodology specialist who has worked with Jose Mourinho for many years, Rui graduated from Porto University with a sports science degree having completed a thesis on high-performance football and research work at Barcelona.
It was at the Spanish club he met Jose Mourinho, who when he took a
manager's job at Uniao de Leiria back in Portugal, asked Rui to be his
assistant, helping to implement his methodology. At Porto they won
consecutive league titles plus the UEFA Cup and Champions League, and
the run of domestic championships became four in four years with
back-to-back Premier League titles at Chelsea in 2005 and 2006, plus two
League Cups and an FA Cup triumph in England.
Rui then applied his expertise to the Inter Milan and Real Madrid
squads when Mourinho moved on, and helped win the Serie A title for the
Italian club, followed by a league, cup and Champions League treble.
At Real the Primera Liga title and Copa del Rey were won before Rui
returned to Chelsea in June 2013, Mourinho describing him as his
'methodology right arm, the guy that understands best my information and
the way I work'.
